Highlights from the February 12, 2024 Council Meeting
Council Procedure Bylaw Amendment
Council adopted amendments to their Council Procedure Bylaw that will expand their ability to participate electronically at Council, Committee and other meetings and that will see two Council meetings per year scheduled to be held in Lavington, with the first to be held on March 11, 2024 in the Lavington Fire Hall.
Kalavista Lagoon Painted Turtle Habitat Assessment Report
Council authorized Administration to move forward with tasks to improve the turtle habitat at Kalavista Lagoon which included:
- Informational signage for the public at the lagoon and potential nesting sites, which would include encouraging dogs to be kept on leash around the lagoon to prevent harassment of the turtles;
- Installing basking log clusters in the center of the Lagoon;
- Regrading the shoreline to allow turtles to enter and exit the lagoon more easily
- Installing artificial nesting sites with exclusion fencing to protect the sites from predation; and
- Planting native aquatic and riparian vegetation along the banks of the Kalavista Lagoon with native species preferred by turtles.
Council further directed Administration to contact the Provincial representative responsible for the water levels in Kalamalka Lake to discuss increasing the water levels and to investigate grant opportunities to assist with funding the sediment removal from the Kalavista Lagoon, which will be considered by Council at a future meeting.
School Road Safety Improvements
Council has selected a design for School Road in Lavington that will include a 1.8 m bike/pedestrian lane on each side of School Road from Lavington Elementary School to Highway 6 which will provide a safer corridor between Lavington Elementary School, Lavington Centennial Park and Maven Lane Childcare Centre to Highway 6. Also included are improvements to the parking area on School Road next to Maven Lane and fronting Lavington Centennial Park. Construction is planned for summer 2024.
Community Resiliency Investment Program (CRIP) - FireSmart
Council authorized Administration submit a grant application for funding of up to $200,000 from the 2024 UBCM Community Resiliency Investment Program for eligible activities including participating in a Community FireSmart and Resiliency Committee, the development of a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP), General FireSmart Education, and funding for a FireSmart Position.
